Meet Columbia Chiropractor, Dr. Stephen C. Thiesing

I just wish I had known then what I know now about finding “true” healthcare.  I grew up in Northern Wisconsin and suffered every fall with seasonal allergies.  I was brought up in the medicine cabinet and my mom would give me her prescriptions for allergies.  There was not a children’s dosage in my day.  All I knew was to trust mom and that you took medicine when you were sick.

Columbia Chiropractor, Dr. Stephen C. ThiesingAfter graduating high school, I was drafted by the Madison Capitals Junior “A” hockey team in the United States Hockey league.  It was here that my life would change forever.  I was skating down the ice at practice and our goaltender came out to challenge me and tripped me.  I went flying towards the goal and hit the crossbar head on.  My body dropped to the ice and began to seize and convulse.  My eyes rolled up to the back of my head and only the whites of my eyes were seen.  I was foaming from my mouth and I was experiencing a spinal cord trauma.  As I awoke from this experience, my coach suggested that I should get it checked out by a doctor.  After a set of x-rays, the doctor told me that everything checked out normal and sent me on my way.  It was five years later at chiropractic school, I discovered that I had a C-6 compression fracture in my neck from that day at hockey practice.

Educational Experience

I attended the University Wisconsin-Eau Claire and graduated in 1994 with a B.S. in Biology.  I was a member of the hockey team and played two seasons before dislocating my left shoulder.  Upon graduation, I decided to continue my education and pursue a career in chiropractic.  I decided to enroll at Life College, now Life University,  in Marietta, Georgia.  I chose Life University based on its location in the warm south but soon discovered the school’s reputation for a strong chiropractic philosophy and wide variety of chiropractic techniques.  While at Life University, I was inspired by the Gonstead Club and many of its officers.  Many of my mentors were connected to the Gonstead Club in some way.  My biggest chiropractic mentors were Alex Cox, Lou Corletto and Shawn Labelle.  All three of these great leaders in chiropractic helped to shape the chiropractor I am today.  They taught me to look to the spine and the nervous system for the cause of dis-ease and to walk the walk and talk the talk.  A chiropractic career is more of a life change or a paradigm shift and it has helped define who I am as a person.

I graduated Cum Laude from Life University in December of 1997 and moved my family to Tennessee to start my practice.

Practice Philosophy and Objectives

The nervous system is the most important system in the body.  We have physical traumas, chemical stresses and emotional experiences that affect our health.  It is the chiropractor’s job to identify and correct any vertebral subluxations or misalignments caused from these traumas, stresses and experiences. Your body will work closer to 100% if the nervous system and the immune system are working without being overloaded.  The body is self healing and chiropractic is the first choice in aiding the body to reach its optimum.  Chiropractic is true healthcare.

Patients want three questions answered:

  1. Can Chiropractic care help me?
  2. How much does it cost?
  3. When do I have to come back?

It is our objective to answer these three questions and help restore your health through good healthy choices.  A person can reach their optimum health status through proper rest, exercise, a positive attitude, regular chiropractic care and a healthy diet.

Our mission is to spread chiropractic to the masses and to adjust as many families as possible while educating and guiding them towards optimum health through good decisions.

Personally Speaking

I have been married for 12 years to my amazing wife Tricia and we have four very active and healthy children.   Amelia, Camden, Therien and Genevieve were all born at home with a midwife and are not vaccinated.  They are typical chiropractic kids that continue to grow and get adjusted on a regular basis.  We have a family dog that is a Goldendoodle named Daisy Mae and she loves tennis balls and going to the lake.

As a family, we love to spend time at the lake with swimming, fishing,  skiing, wakeboarding and having smores around the campfire. We try to convince our family’s to come down to visit from Wisconsin because of the great weather and warm southern hospitality.

The secret to health is regularity. I make sure that I get adjusted 1-2 times a week.  I have made a conscious decision to get adjusted on a regular basis and have created a healthy habit.  My wife and kids get regular adjustments and understand that chiropractic is part of their weekly routine.  I try to follow my R.E.A.C.H. concept toward optimum health.  I focus on regular sleep, roughly 8 hours a night, regular exercise of a minimum of 3 times a week, a positive attitude with surrounding myself with positive people and turning off the television, regular chiropractic adjustments each week and trying to make good healthy choices in my diet along with good vitamin support.

If you want to get your health restored or even just find it, you need a Health Coach.   As your teacher or health coach, my job is to educate you and your family about Chiropractic and on making good healthy decisions to get closer to 100%.  If you want TRUE healthcare, you owe it to your family to have your spines checked today in our office.  Every great doctor is educated and full of knowledge. But the truly Great Doctors are the ones that can keep an open mind, listen and apply that education and knowledge for the greater good of the patient and his or her family towards optimal health.

Dr. Stephen Asks some important questions of interest to Columbia residents - Chiropractor Columbia Dr. Stephen Asks...

Why is a "slipped disc" unlikely?
Separating each spinal vertebra is a disc. Its fibrous outer ring holds in a jelly-like material. Because of the way a disc attaches to the spinal bones above and below it, it can't actually "slip." However, a disc can bulge, tear, herniate, thin and collapse. But it can't slip.
Can someone who has had back surgery receive chiropractic care?
Yes. Rest assured that we will avoid the surgically modified areas of your spine. However, what we find is that surgical interventions will often produce spinal instability above or below the involved level. This is will be the focus of your chiropractic care.
